The Angling association of Skaftártunga owns and operates Hólaskjól-Highland Center. The association was founded around 1960. The owners all own a registered farm in Skaftártunga, 20 farms total.
It also operates the angling rights in all mountain lakes in Skaftártunga i.e. between Tunguá and Skaftá.
Hólaskjól was built voluntarily by the people of Skaftártunga around 1970. When the districts east of Mýrdalssandur merged in 1990, it became the property of Skaftárhreppur. In 2006 it is bought by the Angling association and is returned to the farms that built it. In the autmn the main lodge is still used when the sheeps are sorted by the Skaptártunga people.
Vatnajökull National Park has a base here, but Hólaskjól is 4-5 km from the edge of the park.
The travel and accommodation services in Hólaskjól are available from early in june to late september every summer. Accommodation can also be ordered outside of this period.
It is great to go Cross country skiing in the wintertime when there is plenty of snow, diverse routes, both long and short.
It is ideal to use Hólaskjól as a base when traveling the highlands and vatnajökull by Snowmobile.
